Gloucester, Va

Gloucester County, Virginia contains one of the oldest courthouse villages in the state. The community slowly grew around the original historic complex for several hundred years. Today it remains a charming village with a linear Main Street and a unique circular courthouse “square”.

While the residents have carefully preserved and enhanced the village, many believed that the community needed a new longer-range plan for the future. Through the leadership of the Main Street Preservation Trust, coupled with support from Gloucester County, Frazier Associates was retained with Arnett Muldrow Associates to create the plan.

Recommendations were divided into four areas: design, promotions, economic development, and organization- the four points of the National Trust Main Street Center. The plan contains a wealth of illustrations to highlight specific design projects, a series of suggestions to recruit new businesses based on a market analysis, a new logo and tag line to be used in a new branding program, and specific recommendations for strengthening the Gloucester Main Street Association. The plan was subsequently adopted by the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors.
