Clifton Forge & Covington, Va

As part of an overall visioning plan in 2010 – 2011, Frazier Associates completed an initial wayfinding assessment for the Alleghany Highlands region in western Virginia. This mountain region, including Alleghany County and the communities of Clifton Forge and Covington, is rich with natural resources, historic sites, and downtowns undergoing revitalization.

The assessment helped all parties realize that a wayfinding system would benefit local attractions, in particular the two downtowns, by using the newly developed regional logo on clear, unified, and strategically placed signs to lead visitors off the major highways and to their primary destinations. Schematic design options were developed during the assessment, with community stakeholders selecting a preferred option. Following the assessment the communities agreed to move forward with the regional wayfinding plan. Designs, programming and construction documents were recently finalized by Frazier Associates, with installation under way.  The dynamic design for the signs incorporates the vibrant colors and iconic mountain image from their brand along with materials such as iron rails and stone that reflect the railroad heritage and local resources of the area.
