Many of our residential projects, be they a new home design or a home renovation, include designs for accompanying outbuildings on the property. These structures may include garages, pool houses, artist studios, workshops, and even kennels. Designing these support structures offers the opportunity to relate their architectural character to the house and neighboring buildings, and their placement on the site may result in the creation and definition of exciting new outdoor spaces for the property.
Being located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia provides us the opportunity to work on many rural properties that reflect the heritage of the area. As a result, we have designed, restored or rehabilitated barns, stables, carriage houses, granaries, mills, smokehouses, icehouses and springhouses. Converting many of these structures into living spaces creates their own set of challenges. Extending their original use is simpler. In either case, our office knows how careful preservation and reuse of these vernacular structures offers many opportunities, and contributes to the overall character and functionality of the residence.
