New Market, Va
Owned by the Virginia Military Institute and located on the I-81 corridor, the New Market Battlefield is one of Virginia’s most highly visible Civil War sites. As part of an effort to revamp the site and its image and improve visitation, VMI renamed the museum and created a new logo. They then retained Frazier Associates to develop a wayfinding system using the new logo.
One of the biggest challenges was directing visitors to the site; the battlefield is divided by I-81 and unclear and inconsistent signage created confusion about the entrance. Frazier Associates did a thorough study of existing signs on the site and leading to the museum from all points. Once completed, new signs were developed for the Interstate, gateways, trailblazers, and the museum facilities to better reflect the new image of the Virginia Museum of the Civil War and the graphic standard.
