Fairfax County, Va
The Richmond Highway Corridor in Fairfax County is part of the original “Maine To Florida” U. S. Route One. This older suburban commercial strip grew in response to the automobile. Its zoning, lot sizes, setbacks, and orientation to the car have all dictated the way in which properties have been developed. Many of the buildings are older; consequently, the style, design, and general appearance are no longer attractive to current shoppers, especially given the multitude of retail opportunities available elsewhere in the metro area.
These design guidelines address facade improvements to existing buildings, sites, signs and lighting along the Richmond Highway Corridor. Their purpose is to provide guidance to property owners as they plan their improvements, describing typical building types, aesthetics and a range of enhancements. The overall goal is to encourage quality design that enhances the pedestrian environment and the existing business climate along the corridor.
